BSDB/BSCB Joint Annual Spring Meeting April 7-10 2019

The 2019 spring meeting was co-organised by the BSDB and the BSCB and resulted in an incredible variety of talks and discussion. As always the atmosphere was lively with discussions between talks, poster session and of course the much awaited conference dinner.

Advice from our table leaders about how to progress in your career and find a path/topic that you enjoy and are passionate about.

Postdocs and PhD students had a busy schedule starting from the Sunday where the Careers Workshop helped showcase a variety of career pathways, both within and outside of academia. The session was lead as a round table format whereby attendees could visit up to three tables during the session. Each table had a representative from the field of work whether it be industry, patent law, academia, or science communication. At the end of the session, each table leader gave a one line piece of advice to the room. This wasn’t planned but offered a positive and motivational end to the session. Even as organisers I found this part of the session particularly useful and uplifting, especially considering the ever present ideology that if you leave academia you are somehow a failure.

The ever awaited Student/Postdoc social did not disappoint, and the enthusiasm was infectious- even for organisers! The music round sparked furious debates within teams with cheers of success and sighs of defeat! Fantastic scores all round! Congratulations to the winners and of course commiserations to the now proud owners of the BSDB/BSCB wooden spoons!

Next on the Postdoc/PhD itinerary (ignoring the huge array of brilliant talks during the sessions), was the Graduate symposium. This offered a chance for those earlier within their career to showcase their work and passions for their research. This was a diverse session and included talks regarding preimplantation murine development to blood vessel formation. Again thank you to all of our fantastic speakers for sharing your work with us (not to mention thank you for keeping to time!).

Charlotte Bailey introducing the session. Thanks to all speakers at the symposium.

Last on the Postdoc/PhD specific calendar was the networking event where we encouraged people to speak to different academics (potentially in different fields) and network with their peers. This event was a huge success and the room buzzed with discussion and introductions. If you met your future PI/colleague at this event, let us know!

We thoroughly enjoyed helping organise this event along with the BSCB representatives; Joyce Yu and Gautam Dey. Here’s to the next conference! See you next year!
